Today, you’ll spend the morning exploring one of Sri Lanka’s most important and sacred sites: the Dambulla Cave Temple. Just a 30-minute drive from Sigiriya, the temple complex is perched atop a 160-meter-high rock and is one of the best-preserved cave temples in Sri Lanka. The temple houses over 150 Buddha statues, as well as exquisite murals that date back to the 1st century BCE. These paintings and statues offer deep insights into Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage and are a must-see on any Sri Lanka itinerary.
The Dambulla Cave Temple is also known as the Golden Temple, thanks to the golden-painted statues of the Buddha that can be seen upon entering the caves. The Polonnaruwa Ancient City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is filled with remnants of ancient palaces, temples, and Buddhist statues.
The city’s major attractions include the Royal Palace, the Gal Vihara (rock temple with impressive Buddha statues), and the Vatadage, a beautifully preserved relic house. The Gal Vihara is particularly noteworthy for its massive rock-carved Buddha statues, each with intricate detailing and symbolism. The site exemplifies the extraordinary craftsmanship of Sri Lanka’s ancient sculptors.
During your time in Polonnaruwa, you will also visit the Parakrama Samudra, a vast reservoir built by King Parakramabahu I. The drive from Sigiriya to Anuradhapura takes around 2-2.5 hours, passing through picturesque rural landscapes.
Once in Anuradhapura, explore the sacred city, which houses some of Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist sites. The Sri Maha Bodhi is the most famous of these landmarks and is considered the oldest living tree in the world. According to legend, the tree is a sapling from the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. This site attracts pilgrims from all over the world, making it one of the most significant places in Sri Lankan Buddhism.
Other highlights of the city include the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, one of the largest and most important stupas in Sri Lanka, and the Abhayagiri Monastery, an ancient Buddhist monastic complex. The Kuttam Pokuna, or Twin Ponds, are also worth a visit; these ancient bathing pools are beautifully designed and have a serene atmosphere.
In the afternoon, visit Mihintale, the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
